Welcome to our first blog post of 2024! Our wonderful team here at JFJ have decades of jewellery knowledge and experience combined. But don’t worry, we’ve compiled it in to short reads every month to make sure you are getting the best tips and facts for your jewellery collection. To kick off our blog, we thought we would begin with the essentials – Jewellery Care & Maintenance. The key aspect to keep your jewellery sparkling (and in once piece) is to use the tried and tested cleaning techniques. DIY cleaning hacks might not be the money saver it claims to be. So let’s talk about some cleaning tip myths.
1) “Washing up liquid is a great alternative” While it might seem cleaner upon first glance, washing up liquid can leave an invisible film over gemstones and metals that collects and holds onto dirt (and your everyday creams & lotions) much quicker. This traps your jewellery in a cycle of never looking its best.
2) “Chemical cleaners damage jewellery” Products such as Dazzle Sticks and Cleansing Foam have been carefully formulated by professionals to be safe and effective for various metals and gemstones when used as directed. Our team can advise you on the best care & maintenance options.
3) “All jewellery can be cleaned in the same way” Each gemstone and metal hold unique properties that make them so special, however this means they require different techniques. For example, a diamond is durable and can tolerate most cleaning methods. A pearl on the other hand, should avoid contact with water, harsh chemicals and abrasive tools (that includes a toothbrush).
So if in doubt, call a professional. Our number is linked below! Here are some simple tips that can save you an unnecessary trip to the jewellers and hopefully save you money in the long-run.
1) Close your clasps. Whether it’s a necklace or bracelet, this will help prevent chains tangling and save you hours (maybe DAYS) of fiddling.
2) Lay your necklaces flat to prevent kinks in the chains. This is especially prudent with finer chains as you run the risk of having to replace it. This can also help preserve the silk in pearl necklaces. With frequent wear, pearl re-stringing is advised annually.
3) Apply your perfume before putting on your jewellery. If possible, try to avoid spraying products directly on to your jewellery. This is because the less durable metals and gemstones can dull, discolour and erode over time.
However, the easiest way to ensure the best care of your jewellery is by using our 5 Year Service Plan.
