Every purchase of new diamond or gem-set jewellery over £500 will come with our 10-year guarantee. Our guarantee covers your jewellery for 10 years in the unlikely event that a manufacturing fault should occur.

All you need to do is ensure that your jewellery is inspected by our staff every six months. Bring your items and your guarantee card into the store and we will clean your jewellery free of charge. During this clean, we will check your jewellery for wear, tear or damage and advise you on any work that may be required.

For the guarantee to remain valid, any recommended work must be undertaken.

At Jeremy France Jewellers, we want you to enjoy your pieces for years to come. Proper care protects your jewellery, helps prevent avoidable wear or damage, and supports our 10-Year Guarantee when used alongside regular inspections.

All new diamond and gem-set purchases over £500 come with our 10-Year Guarantee, protecting against manufacturing faults; so long as you bring your pieces in for inspection and professional cleaning every six months.

During these checks, our goldsmiths will:

• Clean and polish your jewellery

• Inspect settings and metalwork

• Secure any stones which have slightly loosened during normal wear

• Advise on any recommended repairs to maintain security and longevity

Tip: Recommended work must be undertaken for the guarantee to remain valid.

First: Smart Habits for Every Piece

Before we look at individual gemstones and settings, here are some everyday care essentials:

Everyday Do’s

• Put jewellery on last: Apply perfumes, lotions and sprays before your jewellery — oils and chemicals can dull metals and stones over time.

• Close clasps and store gently: Prevent tangles by fastening necklaces and laying them flat or storing pieces separately.

• Look after your pearls: They’re delicate — avoid contact with water, sprays and perfume- they will cause irreversible damage.

• Regular inspections: Bring jewellery in for professional checks every six months – this keeps your 10 year guarantee valid and helps catch wear early. Even jewellery not covered by our 10 year guarantee that is worn regularly should be checked every 6-12 months.

Everyday Don’ts

• Don’t wear fine jewellery during heavy manual work such as workouts, gardening or sports — impacts and abrasions can loosen or even damage stones or impact settings.

• Remove all jewellery while cleaning to prevent accidental knocks or contact with chemicals.

• Avoid wearing jewellery in pools, hot tubs or the sea — chlorine and salt can erode metals and degrade some gemstones. Tile edges can also cause damage and scratch  jewellery and gemstones.

• Check with the team before cleaning a new gemstone at home to ensure you treat it respectfully. Never clean pearls or softer stones with ultrasonic tools or harsh chemicals.

Tip: If you leave us your email address at time of purchase we will remind you to pop in every 6 months with an email.

Gemstone Care: What to Know

Different gemstones have different characteristics; some are very resilient, others more delicate. All gemstones benefit from thoughtful handling. Each gemstone has a hardness rating on the Moh’s scale. Diamonds are a 10, as the most resilient gemstones, while pearls are a 2.5-4.5 on the softer side of the scale. Despite strong setting styles, the lower the rating of the stones hardness, the more care is needed.

Make sure to read up on your stone care and the considerations of your setting styles to best look after your jewellery.

Diamonds (Natural & Laboratory Grown)

Diamonds are very durable, but sharp knocks (especially on edges or corners like those on princess or marquise shapes) can chip the stone or weaken claws. They are not indestructible but typically will put up with the tasks we give our fingers day to day.

Best practice: Ideal for everyday wear, with removal for those manual tasks. Professional cleaning, regular checks, and careful wear will allow them to shine for decades to come. You can clean them at home with any jewellery cleaning products between professional cleans.

Sapphires & Rubies

Strong and suitable for regular wear, but they’re not immune to knocks or scratches if they rub against harder surfaces. Being a 9.5 on the Moh’s hardness scale, they can show signs of wearing on the top or edges of the stones over time. Try to avoid hitting them or rubbing them against other stones or metals.

Best practice: Suitable for daily wear, with removal for manual tasks and being more mindful to avoid heavy impacts. You can clean them at home with any jewellery cleaning products between professional cleans.

Emeralds

Beautiful but naturally included — they’re more prone to internal weakness and should be treated with extra care. We treat them more mindfully during their professional cleans due to the typical oil filling of their inclusions that is done at the mine or cutting stages of their journey. At 7.5-8 on the Moh’s hardness scale, they are more brittle and shouldn’t come into contact with any chemicals which could impact their oiling and should be kept away from any potential knocks.

Best practice: Occasional or very mindful wear. Remove before handwashing, washing up or any sports or activities. Keep away from chemicals like perfumes or hand creams. Ensure they are not knocked during wear. We recommend professional cleaning, or cleaning at home with a polishing cloth or dazzle stik.

Tanzanite, Aquamarine & Tourmaline

Sitting between 6-8 on the hardness, These stones are slightly more sensitive to impact and temperature changes. Everyday wear is possible, but remove jewellery before vigorous activities. Tanzanite can be brittle like emeralds so be mindful of this during activities.

Best practice: Occasional or mindful wear. Don’t submerge in drastic water temperatures. These stones can be cleaned with a polishing cloth or dazzle stik at home between professional cleans.

Amethyst, Garnet & Topaz

Sitting between 6.5-8 on the hardness, these stones are also more delicate and impacts and hard knocks can chip or crack these stones if care isn’t taken. These stones have their quirks; Amethyst can change colour if it is left in strong sunlight for extended periods (So keep it off the windowsill and in the jewellery box). While Topaz is relatively hardwearing at an 8, but due to its natural cleavage points it can split if struck in the wrong place with force.

Best practice: Avoid strong impacts, Occasional or mindful wear. Keep in separate compartments in your jewellery box when unworn. Clean at home with polishing cloth or dazzle stik between professional cleans.

Opal & Turquoise

These stones are much softer than stones we have previously mentioned. Opals can crack with impact or even dehydration. They must be kept away from other jewellery as metal and other stones will scratch them. Both stones can absorb oils and chemicals and crack under sudden temperature changes due to their porosity and ability to dry out. These are noted as a 5-6.5 on the hardness scale.

Best practice: Occasional wear with care only. Avoid water, lotions and products. Wipe gently after wear with a dry microfiber or polishing cloth. Keep in separate compartments in jewellery boxes, with chains away from pendants to avoid scratching. Do not attempt to clean at home; wipe only.

Pearls

Pearls are unique and beautiful, but require the most careful handling:

• Avoid water, perfume, hairspray and harsh cleaning agents. Let perfume dry fully before putting on pearls.

• Wipe with a soft microfibre cloth after wear.

• Re-string pearl necklaces periodically if worn often. We recommend every 12-24 months.

Pearls are a very low 2.5-4.5 on the hardness scale which means we must always treat them with care. They cannot be knocked or worn all the time as the natural layers of the pearl will get damaged, dry or cracked.

Best practice: Store separately in a soft pouch away from other jewellery with normal humidity. Put on ‘last’ when dressing and take off first to prevent damage. Wipe with a microfibre cloth and restring rows regularly.

Setting Styles & Wearability

How a stone is set affects how it responds to everyday use. Some styles offer excellent protection, while others prioritise finesse and appearance.

Claw (Prong) Set (4 & 6 Claws)

Classic and light-enhancing, but prongs can catch on clothing or wear over time.

• 4-claw: Shows more stone and is safe for daily wear

• 6-claw: More securely holding your stone in place- particularly effective on larger stones

Care tip: Check claws regularly, claws that have caught and lifted are a common cause of stone loss. If you can hear a clicking noise from your claw set stone- it’s probably a sign the stone is loose.

Micro Claw

Micro Claws are smaller, delicate claw style with fine metalwork. Usually for a row or surround of stones rather than a single stone. Although Stunning in appearance, they’re generally less robust for heavy or everyday wear due to being more fine than a traditional claw.

Care tip: Avoid impacts and get checked if you notice snagging on clothing immediately.

Thread & Grain

Thread & Grain style rings have a little hole drilled for each individual stone, with edges of metal further protecting them and micro claws holding them in each hole. The recessed and protected nature of the setting makes it nicely secure when checked regularly by a professional.

Care tip: Suitable for daily wear, being removed for more manual tasks.

Channel Set

Stones sit between two metal walls (the channels) which protects them from snagging. Big knocks that distort the edge of the channels can loosen multiple stones with a single hit.

Care tip: Suitable for daily wear, get the ring checked between routine visits if it has a big impact.

Rubover (Bezel) & Semi Rubover

Metal (fully or partially) surrounds the gemstone. This is the most secure style of setting along with Flush setting which is where the stone is dropped into a custom drilled hole in the metal and the metal is secured around the top of the stone as effectively as a rubover. Ideal for heavier jewellery wearers as it will hold up best against excessive knocks and an active lifestyle.

Care tip: Despite it being very durable, don’t take this as a personal challenge! Treat it respectfully and ensure you keep up with 6 monthly checks still.

When to Visit Us

You should visit every 6 months after purchase of the ring for the duration of the 10 year guarantee to maintain your warranty. You can visit on other occasions as well, for example to clean up your jewellery for a big occasion, or, if you knock your jewellery and are worried about possible damage.

We can also clean any jewellery not from Jeremy France Jewellers for a small fee, and when you have reached the end of your 10 year guarantee, don’t worry; we offer complimentary clean and checks of your Jeremy France Jewellers Jewellery for life! Usually your complimentary clean will take 1-2 hours after you drop it off, but if stone tightening is required, or during busy periods like Saturdays in December, a same day service may not always be possible.
